Sveriges designer, KIF och SVID startade sajten under min ledning som ordförande i Sveriges designer 2007, precis innan Facebook slog igenom stort i Sverige och det faktiskt behövdes en egen plattform för att bygga communities. Sajten var en matchmaking sajt mellan designers och personer intresserade att göra affärer med designers.

Hu! Hu! HUI Årets julklapp.

Varje år hittar HUI på vad som ska vara årets julklapp. Vad det blir är i princip taget ur luften, men den måste uppfylla endast ett, eller om gissaren har tur flera, av följande kriterier:

• Produkten ska vara en nyhet eller ha fått ett nyväckt intresse under året. (enligt personen som utser den)
• Produkten ska representera den tid vi lever i. (enligt personen som utser den)
• Produkten ska svara för ett högt försäljningsvärde eller säljas i ett stort antal enheter. (spekulativ prognos från HUI)

How to avoid dirty quick-fixes and encourage longterm solutions in democratic elections

What is the problem?

The strategy for politicians and political parties today is to make promises of a better tomorrow if you vote for them and where tomorrow was once a metaphor for a long future, but nowadays it’s literary tomorrow.

Why is this a problem?

Personally I don’t think that the literal tomorrow is fixable, it’s way to late. Politicians arguing about how which brand of silver-tape to use to fix the leaking boat is less appealing to me when I have the strangest feeling that no one is working on a solution to avoid the giant iceberg ahead. It makes the whole process of voting a bit pointless, and people that are not engaged by old school ideology catchphrase questions less likely to vote at all.

The solution

Instead of one we should elect three cabinets layered like this:
1. The Here and Now Cabinet.
2. The Not Yet But Soon Cabinet. Dealing with issues 4-5 year into the future
3. The Way Ahead of You Cabinet. Dealing with issues 10-15 year into the future

What would that accomplish?

For the Here and Now Cabinet the effective strategy to get elected probably remain the same. Vote for me and you will get less taxes, higher income or why not both? We still need people looking out for the quick fixes. They would however have an option to sync their message with long term goals as well.

However to get elected for the Not Yet But Soon Cabinet and would have to win the debate dealing with consequences of policies that the candidates for the Here and Now Cabinet are proposing. Their strategy would also be to co-tail and follow up on popular policies from the Way Ahead of You Cabinet.

To be elected for the Way Ahead of You Cabinet you have to debate your opponents on really big issues.

Why not just have one cabinet with minsters looking out for the different perspective?

Without prototype testing I can’t say for sure that that wouldn’t solve the problem, however I do see the risk for business as usual if the day to day work is not split into three separate entities. If you have tasks you have to solve today you are less likely to devote any time to plan tasks that have due date ten years from now.

What’s next?

Obviously there is a massive amount of details that need to be tested before rollout, and you have probably spotted problems with this model already. I don’t mean problems like it would be impossible to radically change a the parliamentary system of a country, that’s just short term thinking, but real what if problems. From World Wide Web to Closed Country Club


I’ve been talking, or should I say ranting, about this for a while. Every day the world wide web is transforming into a closed country club and most of the inhabitants don’t even care.

First some examples so you know what I’m talking about.


You can’t belong to the network New York and the network Sweden at the same time. Which would just be stupid for more global villagers if it wasn’t for the other segregation between regional networks built in to Facebook. For instance, have you ever tried to add a friend that wasn’t in your regional network? That takes some work even if you are like bff’s irl!

Most people have the privacy setting set to not letting »Everybody« seeing their hilarious life, which makes sense, however that means your potential new Facebook friends have to have the clearance »My network and friends« and above to even find you by name or email. This means less interaction and less internet trafic between countries.

Internet video

Pretty much every video with the potential for a lot of viral videos now have restrictions banning ip-addresses from outside the region. Youtube, Hulu and Comedy Central now and then say that it is because of legal issues however I actually think the real reason is traffic costs. I don’t like that we in Europe can’t see the Daily Show online anymore but I’d respect that if it wasn’t another brick in the wall between cultures. I believe popculture is a great uniter and Internet pop-culture gives people a chance to bond despite countries. But for this to be true there must be one Internet that we can all see at the same time.

There was a trend around 2000 to have local websites for every country. You remember the first page with just a map and the message »Choose your area«? Thankfully it disappeared when marketers without ties finally convinced marketers with ties that todays business is global (they had to call it glocal for ties to listen). Or so I thought… Since they announced that they were releasing the new Palm phone I wanted to read more about it. However up until the US launch a couple of days ago is wasn’t possible to watch more then the first page, everything else was not reachable, I’d say outside US but I just know with certainty that it wasn’t reachable for me since there was no ”this containt is not watchable in your area”-message.

Lot’s of marketers always talk about how great it is that you can do really targeted communication on the web. What I always hear is that you have the possibility to fragment the message so that people can’t socialize around it, and this my friends is bad for business.

Conclusion, broadband is a scarce resource

After listening to the iTunes University course in Internet economics, I got a disturbing insight. No one wants to pay for expanding internet backbone structure. The providers got burned the last time around, since investing in the super highways for net trafic lead to bankruptcies and low rate buyouts the last time (remember MCI Worldcom).
I can understand them, if the players that gets their revenues from lot of eyeballs like CNN and Google won’t pay hughes sums of money for expanding the backbone net, how should I finance it? On the other hand if I’m CNN or Google I would pay either since the internet service provider that sold a internet connection with the fine print “btw with us you can’t watch CNN or Youtube“ would be you laugh-worthy lol, or should I say AOL.

So the Interweb tubes are almost full, that is no big deal you say? You have confidence in mathematicians coming up with compression algorithms that will pack Blue-Ray quality down so you could watch it though grand mom’s dial-up modem? Maybe they can, however right now I see more evidence that points to that the way we are handling trafic costs is by shutting down and minimizing connections not by throwing money at mathematicians. I mean come on, what was more likely to happen?

Jag minns mitt 00-tal


Efter som jag oftast ägnar min tid åt att se vad som kommer härnäst så tyckte jag att det var en intressant utmaning när Erik Starck på Skiften efterlyste min syn på vad som årtiondet vi strax lämnar har fört med sig. En vecka senare, och en fundering på om jag skulle posta det på någon av mina podcast eller företagsbloggar så kom jag fram till att jag skulle sätta upp en mer privat blogg här.och här är min tillbakablick.


Vi hade i och för sig bärbara datorer redan 1999, men den portabla kulturen slog igenom stort under det här decenniet. Efter det här årtiondet är finns det få som inte arbetat hemma på sin laptop, suttit på ett café eller en flygplats och jobbat eller spontant fotograferat en händelse på sin mobilkamera, något de inte skulle gjort helt enkelt för att de inte hade tänkt på att ta med sig sin vanliga kamera.


Vi började årtiondet med Altavista som första val bland den breda allmänheten och efter en kort sväng med Alltheweb för några av oss så tog Google vid. Men med googlande syftar jag på en beteendeförändring. Kommer ni ihåg hela kvällar med dispyter om sakfakta av typen »jag vet att det var Kevin Bacon som var med i den där filmen« mot »nej det var ju Kiefer Sutherland«? Konflikter om sakfakta med stora gräl som resultat är nu sällsynta, vi evolverat till en kultur där vi 10 sekunder in i grälet istället väljer att nätsöka efter det rätta svaret långt innan någon hinner ens bli upprörd.

Nya medievanor

Tidigt in på 2000-talet började vi upptäcka att det var roligare att sluka tv-serier genom att köpa hela säsonger på DVD. Därefter tog Bittorrent, Youtube, Tivo och iTunes vid och omvände oss från passiva tittare på tablålagd tv till medvetna aktiva tittare. Lägg till detta att Craigs-list förändrade spelplanen för dagstidningar och vårt behov att färska nyheter gick en från en stadig hotellfrukost varje morgon till en tapasbuffé utspridd över hela dagen.

Så för att sammanfatta; 2000–2010 kommer vi att minnas som det fria årtiondet, och med det så har jag väl också avslöjat att jag ser att Free både som i information och som i öl är något som vi kommer att vara nostalgiska och/eller skämmas över tio år senare. För en av konsekvenserna av att definiera en epok är ju att vi också kan säga att den går i graven, förhoppningsvis till förmån för något ännu mer spännande.
